One dead, three critically injured in dhoni accident

MALE, Mar 2 (HNS) - A man was killed and three others critically injured when two dhonis, travelling between Male atoll and Ari atoll, collided with each other on the high seas during Tuesday night around 2:30 am.

The two vessels involved in the incident were "Gulfaam" supply dhoni, which was going from Male to Nika Hotel Resort, and "Insaa 18", a fishing dhoni which was coming from Alifu Alifu Ukulhas to Male. Maldives Police Service said Wednesday that the person killed in the incident was Moosa Mansoor, 30, of Alifu Alifu atoll Bodufulhadhoo Heenaamaage. He was a crew of "Gulfaam". The other three people who were injured were also from the supply dhoni.

According to Police citing eyewitness reports from the crew of "Gulfaam", Mansoor was sleeping on an ice container when the accident took place. The force of the collision hurled Mansoor off the ice container into the sea between the two dhonis which, due to the motion of the waves, moved apart and then crashed together again with Mansoor caught between.

Police did not reveal the reasons for the collision but said they were investigating the matter.
