Maldives dives to break world record

MALE, Feb 25 (HNS) - Maldives has made an attempt to break the world record for most numbers of divers diving simultaneously.

This is the first time Maldives made an attempt to break a world record.

A total of 989 divers dived in the Sunlight Thila near Male to break the world record set at Thailand’s Koh Tao diving festival on February 2005 by having 722 divers dive at the same time.

Many foreign and Maldivian divers took part in the attempt. They dived for 10 minutes starting from 11:00 am.

This event was organized by the Maldives Tourism Promotion Board (MTTB).

Many members of the international media came to Maldives to the cover the event.

The Maldivian Minister of Construction and Public Infrastructure Mauroof Jameel and his 13 year old son took part in the world record diving attempt.

Abdullah Mauroof Jameel, the son of Mauroof Jameel, would become the youngest diver to have taken part in the world record dive attempt.

"I am very happy to have taken part in an event to break the world record with my father," said Abdullah Mauroof Jameel who holds a junior dive certificate speaking to Haveeru Daily about his feeling having taken part in the historical event.

After taking the dive the divers went to Kudabandos island.

The divers had lunch in the island while traditional musical items were being preformed.
